Posey County WESTERN Bypass
Project
Description
The Posey County Western Bypass
is a new two-lane highway that will encompass the northwest side of Mount Vernon with a bypass similar to the existing William Keck Bypass that surrounds the northeast side
of the City. The 4.5-mile Western Bypass will connect to the existing eastern William Keck Bypass creating a complete route around the city. This will alleviate the congestion, delay, and safety issues resulting from increased traffic through Mount Vernon. The design and construction of the bypass will be phased.
PROJECT DETAILS
PHASE 1
Phase 1 will begin just north of the existing intersection of Base Road and Upper Upton Road and will continue northeast to the intersection of SR 69 and William Keck Bypass. The bypass will provide at-grade intersections at Base Road and at Lower New Harmony Road.
PHASE 1a
PHASE 2
Phase 1a will realign the existing Givens Road along the north side of the existing Evansville and Western Railroad and tie into existing Base Road. This will provide an unimpeded route to the new bypass from the west limits of Mount Vernon.
Phase 2 will finish the Western Bypass and connect to the existing intersection of SR 69 and SR 62 west of Mount Vernon. The preliminary design includes an at-grade intersection at Upton Road and also includes a grade-separated bridge structure over the Evansville and Western Railroad.
